The SIMA®* DISCOVERY PROCESS
What we accomplish through SIMA® is a complete definition of the essence of individuals.The Process tracks years of lived experiences where from time to time, they intensely pursued what they loved doing and did well. In each of these instances, they repeatedly used a certain pattern of motivated abilities working with particular subject matter in order to achieve one consummation of unsurpassed personal worth.
What is so valuable about the Pattern** is that it gathers up anything and everything which recurs whenever an achievement was experienced. Need for structure; kind and level of risk; triggering circumstances; time for preparation; new or unique requirements; being visible; exploitation of potential; chaotic environment; kind of boss; variety; difficult conditions; need a goal; need to have a standard; need to get results; finished product critical; pressure and deadlines vital; start from scratch; start from a model; head-to-head competition; come from behind; work by myself; work with a team; work by myself until good enough to work with a team; persist until job is done; persist until the applause; etc. etc. etc.
Being aware of such an infinite variety of circumstances, situations, conditions,and relationships is critical to understanding persons, even though the use and criticality of the data varies depending upon the application involved.
For example in our Executive Search practice, exact and detailed description of the critical requirements of the position is vital. Why? Because the exact,detailed description of the candidate’s Pattern predicts how the position will be performed by that candidate. Our client and we (and the candidate) need to know whether the position will accommodate that behavior. Do they match? Where they don't match do you have a way of responding to the requirement because the candidate isn't going to change because we want him to. Good intentions don't cut it.
Whereas in our Coaching practice an imminent decision usually is not an issue and the executive or hi-potential being coached is our primary concern. Because Patterns explain past and present behavior, and predict how future positions will be attempted, our Coach is in an excellent position to enable the person to look at life and work as lived to date. What went well, what didn't. What boss was so great, and why….. and the other kind. Why the stress in making risky decisions, confronting failed promises, keeping close watch on the bottom-line and what , if anything, can be done about it. Examining possible moves; difficult, looming requirements; relational problems… and the like, all provide grist for a safe and supportive, rich coaching experience with the added value that we have equipped a client how to navigate the future (no extra charge!).
Our practice around Organizational Effectiveness is less defined in terms of how we use the Pattern information because applications range from issues of reorganization to managing conflict. Navigating from a development mode to a production organization requires intimate knowledge of the capabilities and especially the motivation of key players. Even the more mundane issue of equipping technical professionals to discuss their careers with their management is enriched and made feasible by the use of patterns to inform those sessions. The use of Patterns is the vehicle to make job-fit audits as first steps in analyzing likely causes of operating problems or marginal results.
